The National Library of Portugal is the largest library in the country and a prestigious institution on the cultural scene. We collect, process and preserve the nation’s bibliographic heritage and make it available to the intellectual and scientific community. Using the latest technologies, we make it possible to conduct online bibliographic research from anywhere in the world.

The National Library of Portugal has a wide variety of collections that encompass documentation from every era, of every type and on every subject. A combination of the legal deposit system, acquisitions and donations mean that our holdings are constantly evolving. Naturally, we place a special emphasis on Portuguese works.

Subject to the terms and conditions of the General Access Regulations, the BNP’s holdings are accessible on-site to any Portuguese or foreign researcher who is over the age of 18 and holds a Reader’s Card. In many cases, access is also possible from other libraries, using the inter-library lending service, or, in the case of works that have already been digitised, directly online via the National Digital Library.
