Rare Books and Manuscripts - Manuscripts

The Tarouca Library

This library was acquired in 1971 from the heirs of the Twelfth Count of Tarouca, Sebastião José Eduardo Pereira da Silva de Sousa e Meneses (1855-1934), along with the family archive. It consists of around 250 library manuscripts that date from between the 16th and the 19th centuries and belonged to the Houses of the Marquises of Alegrete, the Counts of Tarouca, the Marquises of Penalva and the Counts of Vilar Maior, whose members played an important role in Portuguese history, politics and literature in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The collection covers a wide variety of topics, but with particular emphasis on history, literature and genealogy. Of special interest are works like the Cancioneiro de D. Maria Henriques, by Dom Francisco da Costa (a collection of poetry and autos from the late 16th century), the poems produced by the Academias dos Generosos e dos Ocultos, and various copies of the chronicles by Fernão Lopes.
