Posters

There are about 57,000 items in the collection of posters, ranging from the 17th century to the present day. The collection was originally organised in 1975 on the basis of the existing holdings, and was then expanded by various donations, among which those made by Abílio Rebelo de Carvalho, Francisco Madeira Luís and the Office of the Secretary of State for Culture were especially significant.

The collection covers a very broad range of topics: besides the exceptional set of posters on the 1914-18 War, we should also mention those concerning the Estado Novo (New State) period. It includes works by leading figures who are of great interest to students of graphic design in Portugal, from Raul de Caldevilla, Kradolfer, Almada, Stuart, José Rocha, Carlos Botelho and Manuel Lapa all the way to the current crop of designers.
